Tuesdays' Show & Tail - Luna Moth

I'm joining in on Tuesday's Show & Tail at Angela's West Virginia's Treasures. If you have a cute story and picture of a pet, or any furry (or non-furry) friend, you are welcome to join in! Check her blog for the rules, post away - and thanks, Angela, for being a great hostess!
Isn't this moth beautiful? A blog I follow pictured a moth like this and wondered what it was - of course I knew the answer! Luna moths are one of the most unusual and unforgettable of the winged silk-type moths ever! The wing span can be up to about 4 inches, and they are so lovely! They live only about a week, long enough to mate and lay their eggs on the bottom of black walnut leaves. Their eggs hatch in 10 days, and the resulting caterpillars eat leaves from Beech, Red Maple, Hickory, White Oak, and Willow Trees, among others. Usually 2 generations are born each year. Luna moths used to be quite common, but now are among the endangered species in some areas.

What a beautiful moth! I'd heard of them before, but never even seen a picture. We have some really huge moths about that size here, called hawk moths. There used to be a lot of THEM around, too, but I haven't seen one in years now.

This is amazing, I've not seen one of these in ages. They are so beautiful, sad they only live 10 days. But I guess that's God's plan for them. Hope you have a great weekend,
hugs,
Debra
