Vintage Thingie Thursday - Farm Bowl

I love this old farm bowl. It is absolutely HUGE, compared to other bowls I have in my kitchen. Admittedly, I wanted this for display only, but it sure came in handy for bread baking today, as I needed something large enough to hold dough for more than one loaf...
It worked out nicely for letting the dough rise, and was easy to clean right away. It is pretty heavy, and holds in warmth for the yeast to do its job. AND - the BEST part - the bottom says U.S.A. made! Too bad we have to look at antiques to find a bowl made in our country nowadays!

Vintage Thingie Thursday

Lookie - Lookie - Lookie - Lou! Everyone knows I have a 'thing' for Chickens - and isn't this pitcher just GRAND??? Last weekend during our visit to my sister and brother-in-law's home, that dear lady said "Happy Birthday" and handed it to me! Well, it is a couple weeks early, but Mr. Wonderful had bought me a few decorative items for my birthday that weekend, and I'm not above accepting early or LATE gifts for ANY occasion! But THIS hen was SPECIAL!
I was told that she belonged to their mother, who has been gone now for many years. We could not find any maker marks on it at all, but it is clearly a handpainted ceramic pitcher, and definitely vintage. When I looked it over the next moring, on the bottom was lightly etched into the greenware before firing "Patented" blah blah blah "USA". I can't make out the entire lettering, but it looks to possibly read a person's name, perhaps Unabelle? She used to own a ceramics studio, and Mr. Wonderful helped clean greenware sometimes. So, I wonder.....
...what tales this bird would tell! The colors are bright, the gold is shiny, and her eyes are so very large! She needs a job after sitting idle for a while, and I have just the thing for her to do! Here are some great vintage signs - they may bring back memories for those old enough to 'Remember When'...I forgot where I spotted the Pabst Wonder Cheese sign, but there was a short blurb about Pabst Brewery Co. loosing money during Prohibition days (I wonder WHY?!?), so they turned to selling cheeses during those years. Interesting, don't you think? Later, I read the product was kind of pasty and not like real cheese at all, but a good rescue for a company whose real product became illegal at that time!

Vintage Thingie Thursday - Take the BAIT!

I've been working on my redecorating project this week - my bathroom! I wanted a new 'theme' so was browsing the tag sales and local 'whats-zis? shops', looking for more curiosities, as my oldest son calls my collections. I spied this item, and thought it looked interesting, so I brought it home, with a little help from Homer.It reminded me of one of those plastic basins distributed to new patients at the hospitals! How CUTE! It was rusty, however, and when I opened it, I asked for a discount if I did not wish to purchase the entire contents. To my pleasure, the price was cut, and they removed the dried spiders.

When Mr. Wonderful came into the room, I presented him with my find. He was so excited (as excited as HE gets, anyways) as I told him about the price cut, and also my thoughts on what it was. It was then he exclaimed "A WORM BOX!" I looked at him in total amazement...
"Haven'tyou ever seen a WORM BOX???" Oh my....there goes my 'Vintage Hospital Theme' for the bathroom... I was crestfallen. I glanced over at Homer, and it was then that I realized, Homer had known what it was all the time, but had not imparted the info unto me!

He was looking out for himself! He wanted a LUNCH BOX!

Vintage Thingie Thursday

It's time for Vintage Thingie Thursday!!! Visit Coloradolady's blog to participate, or to see who else is showcasing their vintage items today!

The item I have to display is a type of "art" found on boxes made of light wood - light in weight, light in wood tone. I have heard the art term described as "pyrography", but I'm not sure if this is the correct term or not. True or false, it is definately vintage!
The box is about 5 x 3 - haven't measured it yet, but the decoratives cover the sides and bottom as well as the inside lid and inside bottom.And, look at the little hinges, with the tiny nails! One nail is no longer there, but the hinges still work, and I love their design! (Leave it to the Corgi Clowns to get in the way- excuse her, PLEASE!)
I have seen these boxes marked "TIES", or "GLOVES", but never one marked "JEWELS"! So deliciously vintage! This box will soon be found in my etsy shop, along with other vintage items, if anyone is interested. Vintage Thingie Thursday

Time for Vintage Thingie Thursday - Please visit Coloradolady's blog to read what the other participants of this meme have up for display!
I've been writing alot about my chickens, so no surprise I have another chicken item to show you today! I went to an estate sale, which had most exclusively, DOLLS offered for sale. Rooms and rooms of dolls - everything from babies to barbies to buffoons to Charlie McCarthy! In a seperate area, a small item caught my eye - CHICKENS! Well, not with HoMeR popping out of it, of course...this is how I discovered him this morning....A dispenser for wood matches - I believe you insert the entire box, after removing the top and end flap, so it can dispense easily? If anyone knows for sure, let me know. I couldn't resist this, and the chickens are lovely, in great shape. The original owner was definately a collector - the house was filled to the brim with costumes for dance recitals, dolls, and other eclectics. Pricey items, but very unique. It was fun to look, but this is the only item I walked away with - a little treasure!

Vintage Thingie Thursday, and an Egg-citing Adventure!

Today's item for your viewing pleasure may be new to some folks, and 'old hat' to others. This is an antique egg grader, made by Oakes Manufacturing around 1920 or so. Used on many farms, it would give weight of the eggs by placing the egg on the little metal 'cup' after first adjusting the weight (seen on the left) with a twist or two, to 'zero' it out.

Egg Trivia:

A hen puts a protective coating (called the bloom) on the egg as she lays it. The bloom keeps contaminants from entering pores in the shell (eggshells have up to 17,000 pores). Processing plants wash the eggs and coat them with mineral oil to replace the bloom. This protective coating is removed when you wash or boil the egg.

What does Grade A mean? Eggs are graded based on quality and appearance (there is no difference in nutritional value or safety). Grade AA eggs have thick, firm whites and high round yolks. The shells are clean and unbroken. Grade A eggs are just like AA eggs, but the whites are 'reasonably' firm, and Grade A eggs are usually sold in grocery stores. Grade B eggs have thin whites and wider yolks. The shells are unbroken, but might have slight stains.

Why do some eggs float in water? Old eggs float in water because of a large air cell. The air cell forms as the egg cools after being laid. As the egg ages, air enters the egg and the air cell becomes larger.

Why are some hard boiled eggs hard to peel? Hard to peel eggs are probably fresh (small air cell). Use eggs that are at least a week old to make peeling easier. Boil, then plunge into ice water, wait a few moments, then peel!

Eggs of a "Different Color" -

• RED--Blood spots in the yolk are caused when a blood vessel breaks on the surface of the yolk. Blood spots indicate a fresh egg (the spots fade with time) and are safe to eat.
• GREEN--The greenish ring around a hard-boiled egg yolk is due to an iron and sulfur compound that forms when eggs are overcooked, not cooled quickly, or are prepared with water that is high in iron. Concentric green rings inside a cooked yolk are probably formed because the hen's feed or water contained iron. In both cases, the green color is harmless and safe to eat.
• EGG SHELLS(brown or white)--Shell color is determined by the hen's breed. Hens with red feathers and red ear lobes have brown eggs; hens with white feathers and white ear lobes have white eggs.
• EGG WHITE--A cloudy white in a raw egg is caused by carbon dioxide and indicates freshness. As the egg ages, the carbon dioxide escapes through the pores of the egg, and the white will become less cloudy. A pinkish or greenish-blue raw egg white possibly indicates spoilage with a certain bacteria (Pseudomonas spp). We recommend not eating these eggs.
• YOLK--Yolk color depends on the diet of the hen. The more yellow-orange plant pigments (xanthophylls) she's eaten, the darker yellow the yolk.

Mr. Wonderful took me to the Burley Park Flea Market on Memorial Day. We had to park several blocks away before walking through the gate to browse MILES of tables and tents set up by the vendors to draw the crowd's attention to their wares! Not for the faint of heart, let me tell you!

My item for the day is actually these THREE little beauties pictured below!

When we were nearly done 'Flea-ing", I was sorting through a cigar box full of small treasures - the box said "Any Item for $1". Vendors were packing up to leave the end of a busy action-packed day, so I offered $1 for all 3 of these. I asked the seller if he knew what they were - and he said "Do YOU know what they are???" Of course I had not a clue! I only knew that Mr. Wonderful spied them and thought they would make great decorative birdhouse perches!

He then revealed to me the secret! They are called "stiles" - and were used to tap the Maple trees for syrup! These are the vintage type - they have newer and improved methods now, he told me. Now, I felt absolutely horrid for talking him down after receiving that bit of historical information!!! -NOT!!!- I took my prizes and headed off to find Mr. Wonderful so I could amaze him with my new knowledge!!! (But guess what?!? He said he had a hunch that is what they were! MEN!!!)

Vintage Thingie Thursday

I love Vintage and Vintage Style Advertising - and here's a few you might enjoy! I love the one below - It has the vintage flavor, with added humor of modern day thoughts!!!

The item I've chosen to include today is something very unique and delicate - a hand embroidered pillowcase. A simple item, commonly decorated by women of yesteryear to feather their nests during baby's nap time, or while watching a favorite soap opera....

This design is of lotus blossoms and lilly pads - the colors remain bright and the stitching is all intact - I spied it at an old re-sale shop. It seems a shame to put a price tag on the time invested creating this work of art!


Flawless stitching, so painstakingly created! She added the lace edging by hand, and even the hem was hand-stitched ever so carefully!






Here is a view of the back side of her labors - she even stitched a tag with initials inside. Was this for a home economics class? A County Fair exhibit? Or for her own use at home? Simply lovely!
