What is a Meme?

The other day, I mentioned a collaboration was occurring between me and Barb from Treasures from the Heart - a joint effort to get things done - and hoping that some of you might want to join in! It is a new 'meme' we will be starting, and will be posted on Friday for anyone who would like to sign up for that day. (Our meme could have been called "Procrastinators R US", but that would not be very positive and uplifting, nor would it promote actually COMPLETING a project, now, would it??) We welcome photos of past projects as well, because perhaps you haven't given much thought to the idea THIS week - maybe you needed more than a few days notice? That's fine. Your project might be a bathroom re-decorating, removing or pruing old shrubs, planting a container garden, or training your pet! Any project you can think of - the choice is yours!

What is a meme, you ask? "Meme" rhymes with 'cream', and basically is an idea transmitted from one mind to another through related symbols, rituals, speech, gestures, or other phenomena that can be imitated. In fact, it comes from a Greek word meaning "something imitated".

For blogging purposes, memes are variable. Some memes are a show of items, like family photos, antiquities, or items with a color theme. Other meme choices can be a list of statements to be completed by various participants, or perhaps a list of questions that each person answers for their own self, to help others get to "know" them. I have even seen a meme for books read - participants are to give the first sentence in a book, then an exciting paragraph in the same book, and finally a teaser from the final chapter. Indeed, memes are variable.
One thing remains constant: They have a 'host', which is the blog that posts the theme of the meme (which in Barb's and my case will be projects that are being completed) and a list of participants as "links". Visitors return to the 'host' to see the next 'link' or participant on the list, they will visit and leave a comment to let that particular blogger know they have visited! (sounds sort of parasitic in nature, doesn't it? Oh my!) Actually, it is a cool idea, and by joining in on a few myself, I have received visits from all over the world! Very EGG-CITING!

So, I hope you will join in this Friday - tell us a little about your project, post a picture or two, and let us see what you have accomplished during the week. It gives a great feeling to finally finish something - to tic one thing off the list where many more may exist. A great motivation to post it on your blog as you complete it! C'mon - join in our fun!
