- Gotta Go Potty? Questions and Answers
1.) I can't imagine having 4 Corgis! Do you let them run in and out of your house or do they basically only go out when you let them out? My corgi just wouldn't learn not to potty in the house so she is an outside girl. I had every intention of letting her stay in but I just couldn't deal with that since I had a 3 yr old when we got her.
The way our house is set up, there is no way to put in a "doggie door"; besides, living in the woods, I'd be the lucky one to have to chase out raccoons or skunks in the middle of the night, if we had a doggie door!! They go outside when I let them out, and have their various ways of asking to go outside. Prairie will lay by the door and look at you. Dixie and Sassy will vigorously jump into your lap and pop their cold wet nose in your EYE! And Sissy (she was the puppy mill mama, remember) - she just gets 'restless' and will get up and roam (usually she will just lay by me, or sit on my lap, so when she 'roams', it is a signal to me that she needs to go out, or a clean up will be necessary soon! With 4 Corgis, sanity demands they be crated at bedtime. I keep a sharp ear on them, and if someone is ill, or has a need to pee, they will bark sharply or whimper, and I know they mean business! Even older dogs can be housebroken, but it takes a while for old habits to die.
2.) I do have a quick question. I was wondering if any of your girls will pee in your car? I took my girl to go to the vet last week which was too busy that we left and went to the petstore to get her food. We walked her around for awhile while we were waiting for pizza. On our way home she actually peed in my truck while laying down, I think. Now, when she was a pup she would pee on the couch while we were playing with her. I thought it was just excitement but I'm thinking she just might have a problem. She has peed on us when we have taken her on a mule ride ~ 4 wheeler type vehicle. Even after we let her out to walk around just in case she needed to go. Any suggestions?
You do not say how old your girl is, or if she has had pups before. This can all play into the answer. The bladder gets weaker as they age, so with older dogs, or dogs that have had pups, it is quite possible that they are unaware that they are leaking urine - and with some, it is more than just a leak - they let it ALL out! This can happen when they are asleep, as well. If this is the case, the vet can put your dog on an inexpensive med that will help with the problem.
Some dogs, even when walked around to relieve themselves, will not empty out all the way. They are usually excited, or anticipating something they do NOT want to miss out on! So, they quick-pee, and an explosion happens later. In that case, you have to slow them down, walk them in small circles, and wait for them to pee again, in a more relaxed fashion.
Another cause of unexpected (to the owner, that is) peeing is a urninary tract infection. This will cause the need for frequent urination, and is very uncomfortable (if you have ever had one, you can relate!). Keep an eye on how often the dog will relieve itself while playing in the yard. You may notice they have to go every 10 minutes or so, which is not normal. Passing blood, as was Sissy's problem, is not good. You will need to slide something underneath her (wear gloves and get a butter lid or shallow container) to get a sample to take to your vet for analysis, if you believe she has an infection. They can tell you within a few minutes! Antibiotics should clear that up within a week, and the dog will be more comfortable within 3 days!
Some animals, like my Sassy girl, just have a smaller bladder. She always asks demonstratively to go out. If I ignore her (try ignoring when she is trying to shish-ka-bob your eye!), even if she has just been out 30 minutes ago, and she's had a large quantity of water to drink, there will be a puddle! She cannot wait! She is the one I let outside first, in the morning! And she will go right about her business! I try to be considerate of their little quirks, and the only way I know these things about them is by observing!

The last post invited questions from readers, and I received only one, yesterday. Come on, don't be shy - ask away!
How many Corgis do you have? Did you purchase from a breeder?
I have 4 female Pems. Dixie was purchased at a "Clearance Sale" for an extremely low price! We went to a farm supply store, where they were having a 4-H Petting Zoo that day. A lady was pushing a shopping cart full of 6 puppies that were getting pretty good sized. We chose the runt of the litter, whose name happened to be Dixie. We kept the name, and we sometimes call her Dixie Doodles (yes, that is her last name)! She is pictured below, with Sweet Pea, a bunny we 'adopted' a few months back. Dixie is the Corgi with a CONSCIENCE, so she is easy to train, and easy to be with!
Sassy was the next Corgi. She was given to me by the lady who was selling the pups - Sassy was a stray that made her way to the big city, and since she knew I took good care of Dixie, she asked if we would take Sassy, since she was at her limit with dogs she could have as a city dweller. I agreed, and named her Sassy; she has lived up to that name 100%! She is shown below, in her Turtle Pool! She is always ready for BIG FUN, and has been a SUPER MODEL for the note cards that I sell in my Etsy Shop, ClassyChassy!
Prairie Princess was the next Pem that we adopted. The owner advertised her for adoption because her family had moved to the city, and Prairie just was not a 'city dweller'. They loved her so much that they drove a few hours to deliver her in person, to be sure that I was a real live person, and to see the home where their baby would be living! That was a wonderful thing to do, in my mind, even though I would have been willing to drive to get her. She brought her husband and 2 yr old daughter, and the other dog they had, and stayed quite a while, looking at the horses, and chatting. Prairie was not without her 'issues' however - she tries to slip out the door every chance she gets, in anticipation of herding her owner! She is a sweet gal, and we love her laid back personality. She sticks around the yard, comes when called (most of the time!), and can run to keep up with the younger dogs very well! Prairie is shown below, with another adoptee, Herbie, who is nearly the same size as SHE is!
Last, but not least, is Sissy. She is a double registered Pem, and was rescued from a puppy mill. Sissy had produced many litters of puppies for her owner, and did not know how to respond to being let out of her kennel. She was beside herself when asked to roam the house, and didn't know how to handle it. I was told to watch her, as she would urinate on the carpet if not let outside often enough, and she also had food agression issues. Observing her revealed no food agression - as a matter of fact, she would not touch her food at all, except an occasional nibble here and there. I examined her mouth, and her gums were bright red and swollen. Hmmm. She had an accident on the carpeting, which revealed bloody urine. I scheduled a vet appointment, and she had a stage 4 urinary infection, which needed treatment multiple times because she had had it for so long. We made an appointment for her teeth to be cleaned, and as it turned out, she needed one tooth extracted, it was so ulcerated. She was a very quiet dog when we got her - not a spark of joy in her eyes. This is all changed now, and she is pleased to plop herself in our laps at TV time, and absolutely LOVES the turtle swimming pool! She runs for joy, and patrols the yard for chipmunks and other small yard invaders!!! Sassy is seen below wearing her new smile!
So, these are my girls, and how they came to be with us. The girls had such different beginnings, but now they have all learned "the Happy Dance"!

Expressly Corgi Now Taking Questions
Recently I was reading a blog where the author invited questions from readers - anything they would like to ask, no holds barred. It sounded like fun, so I thought if anyone would like to know something about me, my dogs, or has a pet question in general - send me an email, and ask away! My email address is listed in the 'About Me' section. Hope to get some interesting questions posed!
Yesterday there were 2 questions asked, and I will respond to those now.
1.) Is the chicken house door large enough for you to get in and collect the eggs, or will you have the Corgi girls do it for you?
The door is large enough on the back side for cleaning out the litter (I didn't photograph it - sorry!), and there IS a side box built onto the cottage, which contains 3 nest boxes, with a lift-up lid. I can simply stand outside the house, lift the lid, and collect the eggs without even having to bend over! As for those VERY helpful Corgis - the troublesome louts - they would gladly help THEMSELVES to an easy 'eggs for breakfast' in routine time - I dare not ask them to help ME - it would be a fiasco! You should have SEEN the way they stole the boards from the frame as we built the coop! I got tired of chasing them down!!!
2.) Now we finally got to meet Mr. Wonderful. Is there a way to "mass produce" him?
He is technically "Mr. Wonderful _17", so there should be at least 16 others floating around somewhere - or guys that THINK they are Mr. Wonderfuls! I sometimes doubt there is any woman as blessed as I am, to have a clone of MY Mr. Wonderful! Sometimes I wish there were more of him around when large projects need doing! But, my nerves might not be able to stand it when his 'need to tease' mode kicks in! HE gets on Hyper-drive with the teasing, and it makes me crazy! But, I love to laugh, so that is why I'd never part with him!

NEWS FLASH! I'm so excited --- I was just informed that my rustic twig chair was chosen to be added to an etsy treasury by Busybeadlady! To see this treasury, go HERE, and see the choices before Thursday - it expires at 9:45 p.m.!
